Guillaume Delisle is one of the founders of modern cartography, which means that he collected geographical information in a constant scientific way. On his 27th he was chosen to be a member of the Academy of Science giving his work general recognition. He taught Louis XV geology whom appointed him 'premier geographe du roi', and was in contact with Peter the Great, tsar of Russia.
The geographer Philiipe Buache was taught by Delisle, whose daughter he married. He became his father in laws successor at the Academy of Science.
