Guillaume Delisle is one of the founders of modern cartography, which
means that he collected geographical information in a constant
scientific way. On his 27th he was chosen to be a member of the
Academy of Science giving his work general recognition. He taught
Louis XV geology whom appointed him 'premier geographe du roi', and
was in contact with Peter the Great, tsar of Russia.
The geographer Philiipe Buache was taught by Delisle, whose daughter
he married. He became his father in laws successor at the Academy of
Science.
